NOTES

80. Claim was probably shared between pilot and gunners.

81. 1 Oscar probably destroyed, and damaged claims to 1 Oscar, and 1 Zeke by this 6 Squadron Beaufort. Oscar claims probably attributed to gunners.

82. P/O J.A Garnham (A19-18) and P/O N.T Stubbs (A19-98) may have both hit Gordon's second Nick fighter after his fire had crippled the aircraft, and it had started it plunge towards the sea.

83. While S/Ldr. W.S Arthur claimed this probable, Sgt. S.B Laver and Sgt. J Baker also damaged this Betty.

84. ORB does not state if this claim was made by pilot or gunner, and does not state the crew involved.

85. Possibly shared between F/O J.R Richards and F/O J. Barrie, or credited to only one of the two pilots.

86. Christopher Shores in his book "Aces High" has some conflicting information on this interception. Firstly he states that the interception took place on the 31 January 1944, but it actually occurred on the 23rd . Secondly he attributes a half destroyed claim to F/Lt. R.J.C Whittle on a Zeke in addition to his other full Zeke claim on this day. This half claim he says was originally claimed as a probable, but was confirmed destroyed on 10 April 1944, when the pilot of the Zeke was captured after crashing on Kai Island. However the combat fighter report from both pilots involved makes no mention of a probable claim on this Zeke, and that F/Sgt. S.T Kerrison was the only pilot to engage and fire on this second Zeke.

86a. New research by Gordon Clarke, the author of 78 Squadrons history "This Smuttee Squadron", suggests that the Oscars claimed in this action were infact Zeros, and the Kates originally claimed were actually Judy dive bombers.

86b. New research by Gordon Clarke, the author of 78 Squadrons history "This Smuttee Squadron", suggests that two Judy dive bombers were destroyed by White in this interception, and not the the 1 Kate destroyed and 1 Kate damaged that were originally claimed.

86c. New research by Gordon Clarke, the author of 78 Squadrons history "This Smuttee Squadron", suggests that the Tony fighter originally claimed in ths engagement may have been a Judy dive bomber.

87. This Dinah was damaged by both F/Lt. H.B Hewlett and F/O W.J Madigan, but may have been upgraded to a shared probable.
